Wholesale Brock Osweiler Told John Elway He Wants to Retire with Broncos

Brock Osweiler is heading to unrestricted free agency, but if it were up to him, he wouldn’t so much as sniff the open market.

He would never rock another team’s colors or throw a pass in a stadium other than Mile High.

Ever again.

“I told John at the end of the season that I would love to be a Bronco,’’ Osweiler recently told Mike Klis of 9News. “And I’d love to finish my career as a Bronco. I told him regardless of what role I have, being a Bronco is something I take great pride in Men’s Houston Texans Brock Osweiler Nike White Game Jersey Size: 2XL and is something that means a lot to me.

“What we did last season is unacceptable. And I told John that I want to come back and be part of the solution. To help fix the football team and get things back to where they should be, the way the Denver Broncos operate.”

Unfortunately for Osweiler, his desires fall on the far side of overall good. He’s not expected to return to Denver, in any capacity, once the signing period kicks off on March 14. He’s more likely to land with a team like the Arizona Cardinals that could double-dip this offseason by acquiring veteran and rookie QBs.

The Broncos are undergoing a makeover at the position, letting Osweiler walk and putting two-year starter Trevor Siemian on the trade block — moves that facilitate a run at a high-profile free-agent signal-caller such as Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum.

Osweiler doesn’t fit in the Broncos’ long-term plans as a starter and his presence as a backup would only hinder the development of Paxton Lynch and Chad Kelly. He might’ve had a nice stop-and-chat with Elway, who drafted him in the second round in 2012, but that’s all it’ll amount to.

After seven years, he’s well-versed in this business, enough to know it’s a business first and foremost.

“At the end of the day, those things are out of my control,” he said. “Whether I’m a Bronco or not, that’s in other people’s hands. But I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. And I’m looking forward to the future whatever that may hold.’’

Broncos backup quarterback Brock Osweiler spoke with 9NEWS Denver’s Mike Klis and told him that he told GM John Elway that he would like to retire with the Broncos.

Osweiler is an impending free agent but could serve as a backup or stopgap starter for the Broncos going forward. If he had it his way, he would spend the rest of his career with the Broncos.

“I told John at the end of the season that I would love to be a Bronco,’’ Osweiler said, referring to the exit interview all players had with Elway on Jan. 2, the day after their season ended. “And I’d love to finish my career as a Bronco. I told him regardless of what role I have, being a Bronco is something I take great pride in and is something that means a lot to me.

The important thing here is that Brock wants to be here regardless of the role he has with the team. That should be important for Osweiler considering General Manager John Elway has been outspoken about wanting players who “want to be Broncos”.

The former “quarterback of the future” for the Broncos was arguably the teams best quarterback last season but only played in six games for them. In those six games, he totaled 1,088 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions and had a quarterback rating of 72.5.

Like Siemian, Osweiler also understands why the Broncos appear to be making a serious run at Kirk Cousins once free agency opens. He said that last season was unacceptable but that he wants to be apart of the solution.

“What we did last season is unacceptable. And I told John that I want to come back and be part of the solution. To help fix the football team and get things back to where they should be, the way the Denver Broncos operate.”

Osweiler is an impending free agent, but if they do indeed miss out on signing a veteran like Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum, he could be brought back to tutor whoever they draft in the first-round.
